Newborn Essentials for Your Registry

Updated: Mar 25

When we made a registry for our first baby, we honestly had no idea what would actually be useful. We added things that seemed like good ideas at the time. Over the years, and through multiple kids, we’ve learned what truly matters in those early months.

The biggest lesson we learned is that flexibility is important. Babies are individuals, families are different, and needs can change quickly. This list focuses on just the newborn essentials & items that tend to be used most in the first six months of life.

Whenever possible, we look for certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, OEKO-TEX®, and GOTS, and we use tools like the EWG Skin Deep Database as a reference for personal care products. These resources helped guide our decisions for all purchases.

🍼 Feeding Essentials

We recommend breast shaped bottle nipples & pacifiers that support breastfeeding and reduce nipple confusion.

🛏️ Sleep Essentials

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for the first 6-12 months. These bedside bassinets and co-sleepers allowed us to rest safely during the newborn stage and beyond. If you're looking for a more traditional crib, we highly recommend the IKEA Sniglar.

With minor modifications, many co-sleeping families have found it to be the best long-term bedside co-sleeper. The convertible mini crib is also an excellent option if you prefer not to engage in DIY projects.

( rated up to 55 pound - lasting many up to 2 years)

🧷 Diapering Essentials

Tip: Babies quickly outgrow the newborn size, so it's useful to have one or two packs available at least until you know baby's birth weight. Register for more size 1 and 2 diapers.

🧼 Health & Care Basics

(The only baby safe cleaner you will ever need. Each capsule create a full bottle and lasts two weeks)

We love this lotion! It’s the only one we use daily even for the adults.

The best thick multipurpose jelly.

Transportation Essentials

👕 Clothing Essentials

We found it easier to buy clothes seasonally as needed rather than register for many outfits.

Sizes and seasons often don’t line up with when babies actually wear them. Our kids basically lived in target cloud island sleep and plays for the first year of their life.

Coming up next: the extras. The items that aren’t essential, but can make daily life smoother once you’re settled. We’ll be sharing that list soon.
